I teach this subject called Tech Metal to secondary kids. One day five years ago, a year seven girl came to parent teacher interviews with both of her parents. She was a terrific kid and I was pleased to meet her parents, they too were lovely. The interview went well so we wound it up - I had other parents and they had other teachers scheduled. Then the girl said these words... "Dad's got a hotrod" Well, the conversations haven't really ceased since then, I regard them as great friends.
In 2008 I was friends with a bloke who would troll the internet looking for EH to HR Holdens to disassemble and sell off. He made a lot of money and kept a lot of old cars on the road... he also ruined a lot of great cars as well. This wagon was one that was destined for the crusher after he had finished parting it out. I bought the shell, some doors and a 202 motor from him, he threw in some old guards etc and I had the basis of a sound car. I took it to work and used it with some of the Yr 10-12 VET students. The closer I looked at this car the better it appeared. It only had rust in the tailgate skin... that was it! I had it for a few years and collected parts along the way - I intended to hang on to it.
One day the girl mentioned above, by then in Year 10 saw the car in the Auto Centre. She liked it and found out that it was mine, she then approached me about selling it, I told her that it was up to her parents but didn't really want to sell it. For the weeks that followed I considered it... if it had to go, that was the family I wanted to have it - they are such terrific people. So her father Michael, called me and I handed it over for a very reasonable price. Currently, (May 2013) it has just come out of the paint booth and is being re-assembled. This car will make my others look simply amateurish, the work they do on their cars is nothing short of show standard - Michael has a room full of trophies to prove it. I can't wait to be reacquainted with this car...
